HP's Link-5 technology consolidates USB dongles for wireless input devices

HP's new Link-5-compatible Ultrathin Wireless Keyboard.
Link-5 is essentially the same concept as Logitech's Unifying Receiver technology, which debuted two years ago. The idea is that instead of using an individual USB RF receiver dongle for each wireless input device, you can free up USB ports by routing the devices through a single receiver dongle.
Both HP's and Logitech's technologies rely on a 2.4GHz RF signal, and each works with only a specific family of compatible devices. HP's Link-5, unsurprisingly, supports up to five devices. Logitech's Unifying Receiver family supports up to six. We'd love it if the two technologies were cross-compatible, but we have a hunch that's too much to ask for.
Starting today, HP has two Link-5 keyboards available: the HP Wireless Mini Keyboard for $59.99, and the HP Ultrathin Wireless Keyboard for $49.99. Later this summer HP will introduce another keyboard, as well as a series of mice.
