Where are the Japanese robots in nuclear crisis?

Six workers were exposed to excessive radiation from the central Fukushima Daiichi Saturday in an effort to restore power to the cooling of the reactor 2. The crew hopes to restart the system on Sunday, according to The New York Times, but in the meantime, observers had speculated about the number of robots that were used to keep people out of danger. Apparently, the answer is "none."

"I do not know to have such devices," said Hiro Hasegawa, a spokesman for Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco), when asked whether robots were used to Daiichi, which was hit by a tsunami that followed a magnitude 9.0 earthquake on March 11.

It is surprising that Japan, long considered a technological powerhouse, had to resort to primitive methods of cooling the reactor plant.

Tepco has not ever imagine a situation where power sources could be eliminated, despite the fact that Japan is one of the countries most prone to earthquakes in the world.

Japan has invested millions in developing all types of robots, including machines that can work in hazardous places, such as nuclear power plants. These prototypes proved to be expensive, but unnecessary. Tepco has just robots that can inspect the discovery of cracks in reactor lids, informed Hasegawa.

After two workers died and dozens have been affected by exposure to radiation above the worst nuclear accident in Japan in 1999, at a uranium reprocessing plants in Tokai, Ibaraki, the government announced that it will develop robots remote to be used in this type of accident.

Precursor Japan Atomic Energy Agency released several devices, including machinery, a robot running, double-reinforced, resistant to radiation and that could open and close valves in the remote control.

Such a device could be useful in Fukushima, where workers are exposed to serious risks to avoid a disaster. But there were few Rabota devices since 2001.

In their desperation, the Japanese authorities have called iRobot Massachusetts. Special Operations Division of the Japanese defense forces has, apparently, help from the American contractor, four iRobots was Friday en route to Japan, according to IEEE Spectrum.

PackBots and Warriors can be operated at 2000 meters away and can be used to fight fires or to measure radiation levels.

It is ironic that Japan, known for the development of robot technology, had to seek outside assistance in this critical situation. But iRobot is hoped that the machines to help bring the situation under control.
