Indonesia is heavily dependent on air routes to link between its 6,000 inhabited islands, some of which are covered by mountains and forests.
Due to a high number of accidents, the European Union in July 2007 placed on the black list to all 51 Indonesian airlines, banning them to land their planes in the 27 EU countries. Some of them have since been withdrawn from the list, following an improvement in security conditions.
